Already this morn- ing a wood- pecker visited the suet. I think that the one that came yesterday was a downy woodpecker and the one this morning was a hairy woodpecker. Downies and hairies look very much alike; they are black and white with a spot of red on the head. The major difference is that hairies are larger than downies. I am not certain if or how I can take a picture of them but I will try so that I can show them to you.
Do you remember this picture? It is a downy woodpecker in our wood pile. You can just barely see the red spot on its head.
